The Internet has penetrated deeply into our lives. A reliable and fast internet connection has become a basic need. To use computers, laptops, smartphones and tablets online anywhere in the house, almost everyone opts for WiFi. That makes sense, because the wireless WiFi network has become a stable, reliable and fast method of using the internet. The WiFi router ensures that network traffic is handled properly. There are many models of this router on the market, both for home use and for professional environments. In addition to the WiFi router with a broadband modem, there are also many WiFi routers for mobile data networks.

Broadband WiFi router

A WiFi router is included as standard by most broadband internet providers. That router works fully automatically. It distributes private IP addresses to all devices in the home network and translates these addresses into the unique public IP address assigned by the provider. It does not matter how the devices are connected to the router, via fixed cables or via the WiFi network. The WiFi router also protects the network against malicious hackers, so that they cannot access the private part of the network.

Additional WiFi router

These routers supplied by the providers generally work excellently, but there are a few points of interest. One of the most important is the location of the router. Such a WiFi router is often mounted in the meter cupboard near the broadband connection. That is not a good place for a wireless access point. The strength of the WiFi signal can be quite weak in some places in the house, resulting in a slow connection. Another issue is the lack of configuration options. In these cases, an extra WiFi router in a central location in the home can greatly improve the quality of the internet connection.

Dual band WiFi router

The WiFi signal is the most critical part of an internet connection. This can be disrupted for all kinds of reasons, causing the connection speed to decrease. Anyone who is going to buy a separate WiFi router can take this into account. First, choose a router with a strong radio transmitter. Then look at the technique used. A dual band WiFi router has a significantly higher connection speed. Dual band is a technique for sending data to the router via two simultaneous radio connections. Such a connection is up to seven times as fast as a single band connection.

WiFi standards

If you are not familiar with technical terms, you can still see quite easily what quality the wireless connection of a WiFi router has. This is evident from the class designation. It starts with the letter N or AC plus a number. The letters represent the supported technology and the number represents the bandwidth. For home use, it is recommended to choose a router from the AC class. That is the fastest technology, which is supported by almost every device. The optimal bandwidth is between 1,200 and 2,600 mbps. A router with the class designation AC1750 is therefore a fast router, probably with dual band.

Guest Network

Some routers have the option to set up a guest network. This allows you to prevent visitors from accessing other devices on the network. A guest network has its own network name with its own username and password. Anyone who logs in only has access to the internet. By setting up a guest network on your WiFi router, you can prevent visitors from accidentally prying into your private data and deleting photos, videos, music or other valuable things. Guests do not have access to your printer.

Turn off WiFi automatically

Another smart feature for a home network is a timer for the WiFi signal. You can have the wireless signal automatically switch on and off based on a time schedule you set. This saves energy consumption and makes your network more secure. If the WiFi signal is off, unauthorized persons cannot attempt to break in. A WiFi router with a timer for the connected devices gives you the option to only give devices access to the wireless network at certain times based on the IP address.

Other features

The computers connected to such a router each have their own public IP address and can be accessed from the internet. Examples include mail servers, data servers and web servers.

These routers are often used in locations where broadband internet is not available. WiFi routers with 3G or 4G are often found in temporary offices, on construction sites and in all kinds of measuring vehicles and mobile laboratories. This type of WiFi router can also be found in public transport and at travel organizations. They can provide their travelers with internet during their trip using the trusted WiFi signal. This type of WiFi router is quite expensive due to its robust design and weatherproof housing.
