The history

In the late 1980s, Canada was the first country to take advantage of the opportunity to provide telecommunications to sparsely populated and remote areas. They did this by introducing satellite telephony. This meant that it was not necessary to build expensive infrastructure in these remote areas to enable communication. Nowadays there are several satellite networks around the world, namely: Iridium, Thuraya, Globalstar, Inmarsat and Aces.
