A 4G router offers a solution when you need a stronger network. Excellent broadband internet connections are available in much of the Netherlands, but unfortunately not everywhere. If you are unlucky, you will have to rely on a slow ADSL connection. In that case, the mobile data network is a good alternative. Buy a 4G router and ditch the broadband subscription. With 4G internet you get speeds of up to 1,000 Mbps, which is more than enough for fantastic internet experiences. These routers are also a good alternative to supplement your 'normal' internet if the strength of the WiFi signal leaves something to be desired in some places in the house.

What does a 4G router do?

There are many networking products on the market. They have all kinds of nice names, but sometimes it is quite confusing what exactly they do. For example, a 4G router is a combination of three devices. Firstly, it is a 4G modem, which is connected to the mobile data network for the internet connection. Secondly, the router ensures that traffic between the connected computers and the modem runs in an orderly manner. Third, almost every router has a built-in wireless access point for WiFi.

Differences with other devices

The difference between a 3G router and a 4G router is minimal. A 3G router uses the 3G mobile data network and a 4G modem uses the 4G mobile data network. The latter is faster. Otherwise, the routers are almost identical. They also do almost the same thing as a wingle and as a MiFi router. All three devices create a WiFi hotspot in combination with a mobile internet connection. The routers have their own power supply, a wingle that works on a USB connection and a MiFi router has a rechargeable battery. A MiFi router and a wingle are specially designed for use on the road.

Indispensable at home

A 4G router provides a wireless WiFi network. The router connects to the wireless Internet and controls the communication of all computers connected to the wireless network. You need all three of these things to access the internet. Most homes already have an internet router in the meter cupboard that creates a wireless network. Even though the router usually provides a good internet connection, it may still be wise to purchase an additional 4G router. This router guarantees a fast internet connection in places in the house where the 'normal' WiFi network has no or poorer range.

Even in corporate networks, the regular wireless network does not have sufficient range to serve all buildings and grounds. A 4G router is also a good solution here, allowing employees everywhere in the company to always have guaranteed access to e-mail, internet, printers and company information. With a 4G router, they will not even notice that they are not directly connected to the company network, even if they use streaming services. Because the speed and stability of the 4G data network is so great that the difference is barely noticeable.

Difference between 4G and 3G router

In addition to 4G routers, there are also 3G routers. The addition 3G or 4G indicates which mobile data network is being used. The 4G network is the most modern and fastest of the two. With 4G, a transfer speed of 1,000 Mbps is achievable, a speed that is barely inferior to broadband internet. With 3G, speeds of less than 5 Mbps are common. This is sufficient for simple tasks such as checking e-mail and consulting written information or the internet. But nowadays you really need a 4G connection to watch streams or videos.

Mobile data bundles

A SIM card must be inserted in a 4G router before you can connect to the mobile data network. To avoid paying too much for data usage, it is wise to take out an affordable subscription with a provider in advance. It is best to opt for a SIM-only or data-only subscription. This is offered by almost every provider and costs a few tens of euros per month. Depending on the options of the subscription on your smartphone, it may be attractive to share the data bundle. Request an extra SIM card and insert it into the router.

Monitor data usage

If you have just purchased a 4G router, it is wise to keep a close eye on data usage in the first few weeks. With most subscriptions, you have an internet limit, just like with a smartphone. It often takes some time before you can properly estimate how much data you use if all computers communicate with the internet via a mobile network. So don't be surprised, because that can lead to high costs. Of course, you can always take out a subscription with unlimited data usage.

When to buy a router?

If you have a good broadband internet connection at home or at work, but never want to be offline due to a disruption, a 4G router is a good solution as a backup. 4G mobile data is so fast that you won't even notice if the broadband connection goes down. 4G is also a good backup for places in the house where the original WiFi has poor coverage. But these routers are also ideal as a basic provision for internet access. Unlike a 3G router, the speed is hardly inferior to broadband. And if you can make a good deal on data consumption, 4G can probably compete well with broadband in terms of price.
