Types of engines for the boat

A boat motor can be mounted inside or outside the boat. But there are more differences between inboard and outboard motors. For example, an engine that is placed outside the boat, also known colloquially as an outboarder, is always a propeller. With an engine that is placed inside the boat, this engine can be a propeller, but this does not have to be. The engine can also use a generator or jet as propulsion. You have a little more choice with an inboard engine.

Engines that are placed outside the boat are the best choice for smaller boats. This includes motor boats, but the outboard motor can also serve as a supplement to the inboard motors of yachts and sailing boats. Inboard engines are suitable for larger boats, almost everything larger than a motor boat uses this type of engine.

Combustion engine or electric boat engine?

In addition to the choice between engines that are placed outside or inside the boat, there is also the choice between an engine that uses electricity or a combustion engine that uses gasoline as fuel. Although combustion engines have been the norm for years, electric engines are now on the rise. This has several reasons. Firstly, an electric motor for the boat is better for the environment. With this engine you emit far fewer harmful substances and pollute the water less. In fact, we are taking the environment more and more into account, we are more aware of the effects and therefore choose green options more often. In addition, it has recently become illegal for motorboats to have a combustion engine in calm waters.

Because combustion engines use gasoline, the supply you have is finite. You will have to refuel to keep the boat engine running, and if you run out of gas you will not be able to move forward. Electric motors can run on batteries, which can be charged in two ways: with electricity or with solar cells. The first type of power supply is finite, but potentially the batteries of a motor powered by solar cells could never run out. It is not without reason that so-called solar boats are labeled as the boats of the future.

An engine is just one part of a boat, but there are several accessories available that can support this essential part. Below you will find an overview of the types of accessories and supports that you can purchase to supplement the boat engine.

Battery chargers: if your motorcycle is electric, you will have to ensure that the batteries stay charged. Otherwise you have a big problem.
