De Garmin GPSMAP 1022 de een alles-in-één oplossing.

Fishermen and boaters are often adventurers through and through, which means that they can often navigate unknown areas. Gathering information about these new areas is essential, both for navigating the boat and deciding whether or not the area is suitable as a fishing spot. An important tool for mapping new areas is the chart plotter. Below you can read more about the function of a plotter, what information it can display, why such a system is often combined with a fish finder and which brands can be found in the Mediawinkel.eu online store. All information about chart plotters can be found on this page.

Chart plotter function

The chartplotter is a display on which all kinds of information can be shown. In most cases, chart plotters are used as a navigation system. On the map of a plotter you will see the location of your boat indicated. Many chart plotters include a world map, but it is also possible to make your own maps of areas you sail through. This can be done using sonar modules, which use sound waves to gain an image of the environment in which you and your boat are located. In addition, chart plotters use GPS to express the exact position of your boat in coordinates.

A chart plotter is therefore an ideal way to check the position of your boat and see whether you are still on the right course. But there are more forms of information that can be shown on the device's display. This is due to the high degree of integration that a chart plotter has, although this may differ per brand and type. The level of information and detail is also influenced by the size of the screen. The smaller the screen, the less detail can be observed. Of course, zooming in is possible, but for the best results choose one of the larger and sharper displays.

How do you operate chart plotters?

A chartplotter is a display where you often have the choice between two ways of operating it. There are chart plotters that require you to use buttons to control them, but there are also new variants that use a touchscreen. Your preference will depend on the way you fish. If you use gloves a lot, working with a touchscreen is inconvenient. But if you want to use high-quality chart plotters, a touchscreen is indispensable. So keep an eye on your own wishes and needs when making a choice.

Information on screen

As mentioned earlier, it is possible to show much more information on the system's display. For example, it is possible to integrate many other instruments within the chartplotter, so that the data obtained from these instruments can also be shown on the display. This includes tools such as an echo sounder, fish finder, sensors, sonar modules. With the most advanced systems it is even possible to monitor all of the ship's electrical systems using the chart plotter.

Combination between plotter and finder

The instrument with which the chartplotter is most often combined is the fish finder. Although the name may imply that the fish finder only locates fish for you, this instrument does more than that. You mainly use it to determine whether a certain area is suitable for fishing. Obtaining the information is done using sonar modules. This way you can view elements such as the fish population, the properties of the soil, the water (for example the temperature) and the vegetation present. Based on this data, the fisherman can make a judgement: is this area a good fishing spot or not? This information can be shown on the display. An indispensable instrument for every angler.
