How do sonar modules work?

You have probably heard of sonar, which is used by submarines and in nature by bats. This uses sound to create an image of the nearby environment. Objects in the water are detected based on this sound. Sound waves collide with objects, after which a sonar module knows that an object is there. To get a clear picture of the object you need several modules. These are also suitable for depths, because the sound waves sent downwards only bounce back when they reach the bottom. The systems therefore provide an accurate picture of the depth of the water.
