Are you looking for NMEA 0183 or NMEA 2000 cables? Then Mediawinkel.eu is the right place for you. On board a ship you will have to use many types of ship cables, because after all you use a lot of instruments on board that require both power and connections between different devices. This includes adapters to make connections between two devices that are not actually compatible, network cables so that your PC can connect to the internet, extension cables, gateways, connectors and many more cables. The boat may also contain NMEA 0183 or NMEA 2000 cables. But what kind of cables are these actually? And what does this mean? You can read this and more below.

What requirements must a cable for the boat meet?

First, let's take a step back and talk about the qualities a cable must possess before it is suitable for use on a boat. After all, we are talking about NMEA cables. You can't just use any cable for a boat. After all, on a boat you have to deal with water and different weather conditions. If a cable cannot withstand this, it can cause major problems. This includes damage to a device to a potential boat fire.

What is NMEA?

To enable communication between different forms of marine technology, you need a protocol to realize the exchange of information. NMEA has several protocols in this area, for example the NMEA 0183 and the NMEA 2000 (often used by the well-known brand Raymarine) protocols. This allows different devices on the boat to exchange data with each other.

What types of marine technology can you think of? For example, sonar, radar, electric compass, autopilots, GPS, chart plotters, fish finders and many more forms of marine technology. It is also possible to connect marine technology to your own PC using a cable. In short, a lot is possible with NMEA 2000 or NMEA 0183 cables.

NMEA 0183 and NMEA 2000 - Different protocols

There are different types of protocols to allow ships to exchange data with each other. Commonly used protocols are the NMEA 0183 and the NMEA 2000 protocols. The NMEA 0183 protocol is suitable for sending information via serial connections. This protocol can be obtained for a fee from the National Marine Electronics Association. The NMEA 0183 protocol consists of several separate messages with certain data. The sentences can be up to 82 characters long and contain at least the following parts:

Starts with the dollar sign ($).
The 'talker ID' is then displayed. This is an abbreviation for the equipment that sends the message.
This is followed by the 'sentence identifier' (three letters)
The next part consists of numbers and text in variable length. The content is determined by the sentence identifier and the NMEA 0183 protocol.
A 'checksum' can be added at the end of the message. A checksum consists of a * and the xor representation of all characters between $' and '*'. The checksum is two characters long.
Finally, the characters 'carriage return' and 'line feed' follow.

NMEA 2000 is a higher layer protocol developed and maintained by the National Marine Electronics Association as a communications standard for the maritime industry. This higher-layer protocol is mainly used on boats and ships to connect equipment such as GPS, autopilots, depth sounders, navigation instruments and engines. The NMEA 2000 protocol is based on the J1939 higher layer protocol, as specified in ISO 11783, with the addition of the Fast Packet transfer method and PGNs for ship-specific data.

The reliability of the information

For an indication of the reliability of the received NMEA data, it is possible to check the number of satellites used for positioning. If you need to have the most accurate positioning possible, it is important that the satellites are as far apart as possible from the location of the receiver. The more satellites used, the more accurately the location of the receiver can be determined. To determine the accuracy of the satellites it is possible to use the 'dilution of precision' (DOP). There are different variants of the DOP:

PDOP = Position Dilution Of Precision (most commonly used)
VDOP = Vertical Dilution Of Precision
GDOP = Geometric Dilution Of Precision
HDOP = Horizontal Dilution Of Precision
TDOP = Time Dilution Of Precision

Types of cables

If you take a look at the Mediawinkel.eu webshop, you will soon see that there are different types of cables for the boat. Below you will find an overview of the cables that you can buy at Mediawinkel.eu:

USB cables: these cables create a connection between the network and the PC or laptop on board.
PC interface: this also establishes a connection between the network and the PC.
Data gateway: not every form of marine technology speaks the same 'language'. You can see the data gateway as a kind of translator that enables different devices to communicate with each other. A good example from the Mediawinkel.eu range is the EMU-1 Engine Data Gateway, which uses a cable to convert the data from analog engine sensors into the language of the NMEA 2000 protocol, after which the engine data can be received via the network on a smartphone, PC or interface.
NMEA 0183 to NMEA 2000: There are multiple protocols, multiple 'languages' that an instrument can speak. There are differences between these two protocols, which means that a cable must serve as a kind of translator between the two. A good example of this is the NGW-1-USB from Actisense, which can convert NMEA 0183 data to NMEA 2000 data.
Multiplexer: Marine technology that uses NMEA can cause ground loops, which can have harmful consequences. Multiplexers prevent ground loops.
Buffers: signals can differ in voltage level. If these signals do not arrive at the correct signal level, the quality of the signal is reduced. Buffers ensure that signals arrive at the correct level.
Multi-port connector: allows four different devices to be connected to the network.
