Autopilots can be seen as a kind of autopilot. With this instrument for the boat, you do not necessarily have to steer yourself when you are sailing the boat. How exactly does an autopilot work?

An autopilot is the perfect solution when you feel like you are too busy steering the boat and want to enjoy sailing a little more. The system is an autopilot that helps you with control. This means you no longer have to have your hands on the wheel all the time. Not only does this ensure that you always stay on the right course, but because you travel to your destination more efficiently, you also save on fuel. In short, enough reasons to choose such a system.

But how does an autopilot actually work? Essentially, you can detect four fixed parts on most vending machines. Firstly, there is the sensor, which you can think of as a radar and compass in one. Based on this, an image of the environment on the water is created. For example, it detects other boats and objects in the water and adjusts the course accordingly where necessary. In addition, there is the drive unit, which carries out the steering. There are also control units that you can use to set things up. Finally, you have a course computer on which you can keep an eye on the course.

Adjusting the autopilot

Autopilots are very user-friendly, it is a piece of cake to set the correct course. First, you enter a course planning so that the machine knows which course to follow. You then follow this course for a few seconds, after which you press the 'auto' button. This sets the course. Thanks to the sensors, the environment is monitored, so that adjustments can easily be made where necessary. Some autopilots, for example from the Raymarine brand, have SmartSteer algorithms. They learn from the deviations so that they can manage even better and more efficiently in the future.
